The Allure of the Easy Depression Cure

Depression is a call to change something in your life.

Your challenge is to find that ‘something’ and then deal with it. Depression has always been with us. It’s an emotion – a real emotion. And like all real emotions, is has a positive side and a negative side.

The negative side of depression is the side we are all most familiar with. The sadness…

The sadness…

The resignation…

The apathy…

The lack of enjoyment in living life…

The difficulty in doing anything…

The horrible hopelessness…

The lack of color in the world…

This is the side we know.

However, all emotions that are ‘real’ emotions (as opposed to ‘fabricated’ emotions, such as guilt) have both a positive side and a negative side. The positive side of depression is that it is a message to change.

It is a call to action, to make a change in your life.

Just like a marker or a flag or an arrow pointing the way, depression is an indicator, (sometimes a loud one!) that something needs to change in your life. Maybe it’s the direction your life is taking. Maybe it’s your motivation. Maybe it’s something else.

But mostly, I would say it’s a new way of looking at your emotions.

Here’s the problem that so often happens when you’re depressed:

It starts with a simple desire to not feel the bad feelings. So you shut them down. “I won’t feel fear.” “I can’t get angry.” “I’m not going to feel hurt.” But all feelings flow through the same pathway. When you try to shut down what you don’t want to feel, it’s like crimping a garden hose. It impedes the entire flow. So you end up feeling less of everything – not just what you don’t want to feel. So you have to crimp the hose even more – and try to feel even less.

It becomes a vicious downward spiral where you sink deeper and deeper. In reality, emotions make you feel alive. You want to feel everything as fully and completely as possible – so you can let it pass right through you. Even the ‘bad’ emotions.

Of course there really is no easy depression cure: instead it comes down to developing a new relationship with all your emotions. Because the more you feel, the more you heal.

This is the secret to feeling better: being willing to feel it all. Even the dark despair. Even the worst emotional pain. You want to bring it all into your heart so your heart can do its job – process out the feelings so you become ‘more’. There’s a lot more to it than that, but you get the general idea.
